Unit 3: Stories Reflection
These studios were eye-opening for me. They went beyond just art work to something that meant much more. They told stories of my past, my present, and what I want from the future. They were very fun to create but also told something about me with every creation. From the political cartoon which told about my frustration with society idolizing celebrities instead of true heroes to my wish for a "greener" planet. This artwork showed people a glimpse of who I am and was awakening for me to see what I really value and want. I learned things about myself through these projects.
I learned through these studios that the story was just as important to me as the actual art was. Like Pink states, "Story is just as integral to the human experience as design" (p. 101). We as humans relate more closely when we hear the story behind the art, otherwise we are just looking at a lot of water bottles stacked on top of each other. It is impossible to take the emotion out of the artwork. As said in Pink, "We are our stories. We compress years of experience, thought, and emotion into a few compact narratives that we convey to others and tell to ourselves" (p. 115). These studios would be beyond useful in my future classroom. Not only would they allow my students to express how they are feeling in a fun and hands-on way but I will get to know them better on an individual basis because I will learn their stories, I will learn what makes them, them.
