Unit 1 Identity Reflection
This unit helped me explore who I am and what it means to express yourself through artwork of various forms. It was fun to research various characters and see which ones I could relate to or represented me in some way. In the end I found that Toulouse from The Aristocats represented me well and that Lucifer from Cinderella was my exact opposite. Which is where the inspiration for my work came from. This studio lesson related to the big idea of identity because I was finding myself through another character, I was analyzing character traits I possess and don’t possess and comparing that to beloved characters that I grew up with. I saw my identity through this artwork.
I could most definitely see myself using this in my classroom with my students. It was a great way to stop and take a look at yourself and see how you could portray yourself through someone/something else. For some teachers this task may seem hard for elementary students but teachers should encourage students to explore perspective, emotion, and persistence in their artwork (The Creative Arts p.130). Art integration is extremely important to a student’s development, teachers have to enable, empower, engage, and extend for their students to be successful (The Creative Arts p. 139). If not this project, I hope to use something very similar in my classroom to help my students explore their own identities and learn about the identities of their classmates.
