Unit 2: Relationships Reflection
These projects were very fun for me to work on. I got to explore my relationships with the people, places, and things around me and it was an eye-opening experience. When I first hear the word relationship I immediately think of something that people share, I never would have considered the relationship to me and my house, or me and my culture or society. As Pink says, “The clothes that cover your body. The piece of furniture on which you’re sitting. The building that surrounds you. These things are part of your life because someone else imagined them and brought them into being” (A Whole New Mind p. 70). Before this unit I never would have realized how colossal this quote is because all of these things mentioned have some sort of relationship to me and to someone else and maybe even to another culture, and I never would have realized that without this unit.
I can use something like this in my classroom by having the students examine the relationships in their lives that mean something to them and having them create a piece of art that represents that, just like I did. Lessons with writing aren’t always enough, as Pink says, “People’s emotions are rarely put into words; far more often they are expressed through other cues” (A Whole New Mind p 162). This is why I will incorporate a lesson like this into my classroom; this art can show me something that just talking to them wouldn’t tell me. I will learn more about my students through something like this.
